When Care Home Residents Need Urgent Dental Care

Dental emergencies in care homes require a swift, specialist response. Transporting an elderly or vulnerable resident to A&E or an emergency dental surgery is often impractical, distressing, and can worsen their condition. Our mobile dental team provides on-site emergency care — coming directly to the care home to assess and treat residents in familiar surroundings.

We prioritise care home emergency calls and aim to attend as quickly as possible, often within the same day or next working day. Our dentists are experienced in treating elderly patients with complex needs, including those with dementia, limited mobility, and multiple medications.

Common Care Home Dental Emergencies

Toothache & dental pain: Persistent or severe tooth pain that’s affecting the resident’s ability to eat, sleep, or function. We diagnose the cause and provide immediate pain relief through treatment or medication.

Broken or lost dentures: Residents who cannot eat without their dentures need urgent repair or replacement. We can often repair dentures on-site or arrange rapid laboratory turnaround.

Dental abscess: Swelling, pain, and infection that can become serious if untreated. We provide drainage where possible and prescribe appropriate antibiotics.

Broken or chipped teeth: Sharp edges can cause pain and damage to the tongue and cheeks. We smooth sharp edges and assess whether further treatment is needed.

Lost crowns or fillings: We can recement crowns and replace lost fillings at the care home to protect the exposed tooth.

Soft tissue injuries: Cuts, ulcers, or sore areas in the mouth that need assessment and treatment.

What to Do While Waiting for the Dentist

For toothache, offer the resident over-the-counter pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen, if not contraindicated by their medications) and a cold compress to the outside of the cheek. For broken dentures, remove the denture to prevent choking hazards and offer soft foods. For a knocked-out crown, keep the crown safe and avoid letting the resident chew on that side. For swelling or abscess, call us urgently as antibiotics may be needed.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Many care home dental emergencies can be prevented with regular check-ups and good daily oral care. We offer comprehensive preventive care packages for care homes including regular dental clinics, staff oral health training, and individual care plans.
