Professional Dental Assessment at the Bedside
Hospital inpatients often have dental needs that go unaddressed because they can’t attend a dental surgery. Our mobile dentists visit hospital wards across Leeds and Yorkshire to carry out full dental assessments at the patient’s bedside. This service is invaluable for long-stay patients, those with complex medical needs, and patients being prepared for discharge to a care home or home with support.
What a Bedside Assessment Includes
Full oral examination: We examine all teeth, gums, and soft tissues, checking for decay, gum disease, infections, loose teeth, oral ulcers, and any signs of oral cancer.
Denture check: For patients who wear dentures, we assess fit, condition, and whether they’re still appropriate. Missing or damaged dentures are noted for replacement or repair.
Treatment planning: We identify what treatment is needed, what can be provided at the bedside, and what may require referral. We discuss options with the patient and their family.
Written report: A detailed written report is provided for the patient’s medical notes, covering clinical findings, treatment provided or recommended, and follow-up requirements. This is shared with the ward team and can be forwarded to the patient’s onward care provider.

How to Refer a Patient
Ward staff, discharge teams, or family members can refer a patient by calling us on 0113 833 2782 or emailing info@homevisitdentistleeds.co.uk. We’ll discuss the patient’s needs and arrange a visit, typically within the same week. We liaise with the ward to agree a suitable time and work around medical schedules.
