Ward teams may not have the expertise or equipment to address dental problems — and transferring the patient to an emergency dental clinic is often impractical. Our mobile dental team provides urgent bedside treatment, diagnosing the problem and delivering pain relief directly on the ward.
Common Hospital Dental Emergencies
Severe toothache: Persistent dental pain that’s preventing the patient from eating or sleeping. We diagnose the cause — whether it’s decay, infection, or a cracked tooth — and provide immediate treatment.
Dental abscess: Swelling and infection that can become serious if untreated, particularly in immunocompromised patients. We provide drainage where possible and coordinate antibiotic therapy with the ward team.
Broken teeth: Teeth that have broken or chipped, causing sharp edges that damage the tongue and cheeks. We smooth sharp edges and stabilise the tooth.
Lost fillings or crowns: Exposed teeth causing sensitivity and pain. We provide temporary or permanent restorations at the bedside.
Denture-related pain: Ill-fitting dentures causing sore spots, ulcers, or difficulty eating. We adjust or repair dentures on-site.
Treatment at the Bedside
Our dentists carry portable equipment including examination instruments, temporary filling materials, extraction forceps, and denture adjustment tools. Many dental emergencies can be fully resolved at the bedside in a single visit. For situations requiring more complex treatment, we stabilise the patient’s condition and arrange appropriate follow-up.
We always coordinate with the ward team regarding the patient’s medical history, current medications, and any precautions needed. Written records are provided for the patient’s medical notes.
